During the October 2025 COSTHA Virtual Membership meetings, members identified several challenges related to packaging. To address these, COSTHA has scheduled a meeting to discuss these topics, explore potential industry solutions, and determine what data is needed to support them. 📅 Friday, December 12, 2025 | 10am -11am (ET) Additionally, we will assess whether the volume and nature of packaging issues warrant re-engaging the COSTHA Packaging Working Group, allowing us to work through these challenges toward an industry-wide solution. Please plan to attend and collaborate with us on the topics listed below. Your input will be invaluable in shaping the next steps. Topics for discussion:

BATTERY NEWS Proposed All-Climate Battery Design Could Unlock Stability in Extreme Temps. A new battery design, proposed by researchers at Penn State, could allow lithium-ion batteries to perform well in any climate by using optimized materials and an internal heating system. (November 10, 2025 – ENN) -- -- -- Researchers Develop Metallic Gel That Could Transform Batteries. Researchers at Texas A&M University have developed the first metallic gel - a heat-resistant material made entirely of metals that could revolutionize energy storage and make liquid metal batteries safe for mobile use. The gel forms when two metal powders are heated: one melts into a liquid while the other stays solid, creating a scaffold that traps the liquid metal inside. Unlike common gels, metallic gels remain stable only at extreme temperatures, around 1,000°C (1,832°F). (November 6, 2025 – ENN) RAIL TRANSPORTATION Parallel Systems tests autonomous, battery-powered railcars in Calif. (US). Parallel Systems is testing autonomous, battery-powered railcars in California as a green alternative to trucks. The startup, which has raised $100 million and has Federal Railroad Administration approval, aims to increase rail market share and reduce carbon emissions. The railcars, which can travel 500 miles on a single charge, are being tested at speeds up to 40 mph and are quieter than diesel trains. (November 2, 2025 – Los Angeles Times) |
